Picture yourself face-to-face with a wild Asiatic lion. Feel their majestic golden coat contrasted by their fierce, silent power. Listen to the absolute stillness of the forest as you stand in awe. You are not dreaming. This is a reality just meters away from you, every day at Gir National Park in Gujarat, India. Gir National Park is the only habitat of wild Asiatic lions on the planet. The park has implemented a great system of separating the different zones. So, knowing the Safari zones in Gir National Park will enable you to plan an optimum trip. We will take you through everything you should know.
This question is very common among new visitors to Gir National Park. The answer is straightforward. Gir National Park has 13 safari zones; however, the most famous zones are Sasan Gir and Devalia Safari Park. The forest department is responsible for determining the routes used for the jungle safari. Because of this, the guests reserving the safari are not able to select their routes. Each route, however, is good and will enhance the guests' likelihood of spotting wildlife.
The Sasan Gir is the best and most famous of all the safari zones. It is the zone through which the jeep safaris access the lion territory's core, deep within the area. It also has rocky hills, open grasslands, and dense forests. Because of this, and the increased likelihood of spotting wildlife, it is recommended for any first-time visitors and people who enjoy wildlife photography.
Devalia is located 12 kilometers from Sasan Gir village. It is a 4.12 sq km area that is fenced off and will most likely yield sightings of lions and leopards. This area has cemented tracks, which means it is open to safaris during the rainy seasons, unlike other zones. Because of this, it is good for families and visitors who do not have a lot of free time. There are bus safaris that operate every hour and last for 45 to 60 minutes.
This zone is particularly liked by birdwatchers. The combination of dense forest with open areas is excellent for birdwatching. Additionally, various deer species, foxes, and jackals can also be seen in the area. So, if your preference for nature photography extends beyond lions, you will enjoy this zone a lot.
Ambardi Wildlife Interpretation Zone is located near Amreli. It is comparable to Devalia Park and provides excellent opportunities for seeing Asiatic lions, leopards, and many more wild animals. Further, this zone is more sparsely populated. This way, you receive a more tranquil and personalized wildlife experience.
There are two daily safari slots — morning and afternoon. The morning safari in winter is from 6:45 AM to 9:45 AM. The early morning slot is also the best chance to see lions, so always try to book the morning. From 16th June to 15th October every year, Gir Jungle Safari is closed due to the monsoon season.
